For the moments between songs, riffs or notes the time where silence is golden - the noise gate is for you.
When playing with higher gain sounds, dodgy power or simply lots of effects - the hiss and hum can be unbearable. Fortunately a noise suppressor can be utilised. It's common to throw one of these at the end of the signal path to act as a 'gate'. Allowing certain sounds above a 'volume threshold' to pass through, but closing the gate when it drops below (the hum noise). This means you can chug away on your staccato riffs which will be loud enough to drown out any noise and pass through the gate, but when you want silence - just stopping and playing will give you that as the noise will be 'gated'.
Without altering the tone of the instrument, noise and hum is eliminated. With the noise-detection circuit, the attack of the notes are preserved too.
